Winona Masonic Theater

There’s just something about gigantic paintings…



The above is one of the backdrops which was painted by hand over a hundred years ago for the Masonic Lodge in Winona, Minnesota. Time and wear and water damage are of course taking their toll, and in the hopes of having them restored sometime in the future, the city of Winona is nearing the beginning of a process of removing the drops and placing them in safe storage, until some future date when, hopefully, the drops can be restored. In preparation for that, and not knowing when or if these backdrops will ever be seen in public again, I’ve been hired to document each main backdrop (an example shown above) and whole scenes, including cutaway drops that provide a huge amount of depth to the stage (shown below.
